Wildlife Emergency Response
Oiled Wildlife Response and Relief
Our highly trained and experienced personnel are quick to respond to any man-made or natural disasters such as hurricanes and oil-spills. Our new state-of-the-art facility and large volunteer base allow the center to handle a large influx of patients during an emergency or natural disaster. The management team is OSHA-certified, HAZWOPER-trained, TWIC-certified and ICS-trained.
One of our most active programs is the Oiled Wildlife Response program, which treats animals that have been affected by oil spills and trains volunteer teams and industry personnel through hands-on workshops. Teams of state and federally permitted wildlife rehabilitators, federal officials, regulatory agencies and local citizens care for all species of birds, mammals and reptiles (including endangered species) during an oil spill involving wildlife or during other emergencies like hurricanes and wildfires.
The following oil spill response equipment is available:
A 48-foot, custom-built, two-section enclosed top trailer with a 10,000-watt generator, three air conditioning units and a built-in water tank and fueling station to assist with collection, triage, and transport
A 38-foot air-conditioned bus equipped with 24 stainless steel cages and two surgery tables with anesthesia machines that can assist with triage and transport of oiled animals
3,000 crates and kennels, 44 cases of towels, trash bags, and feeding bowls, etc.
Response equipment is stored in 8 “push pact” containers that can be trucked or airlifted anywhere for oiled wildlife response
The Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Texas is located in Houston and can accommodate well over 1,000 adult shorebirds
The team is prepared to respond to oil spills involving wildlife 24 hours a day and are able to provide the following services:
- Oiled wildlife assessment
- Wildlife facility set-up
- Wildlife protection/retrieval
- Rehabilitation/wildlife center management
