How It Works

The Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Texas does not have a minimum weekly hour requirement. However, each volunteer must commit to at least six hours during a six month period. All potential volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers must have consistent access to the internet and email to schedule their volunteer shifts and receive important volunteer updates.

Your volunteer application is processed through the Houston SPCA. Click the link below to begin the application process, which includes payment, background check (18 & up), application and orientation. Please note: The Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Texas does NOT conduct orientation during the months of October, November, December or January.

Volunteer Opportunities

Direct Animal Care: Animal handling, food preparation, feeding, and cleaning.

Community Education: Assist with onsite and outreach educational presentations. Volunteers must have a minimum of 20 hours in a direct animal care area to be considered for this opportunity.

For more information, please email volunteer@houstonspca.org or call 713-861-9453.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there availability for one-time volunteering?
Unfortunately, because of the amount of training required to work with our animals, we do not offer one-time training opportunities for individuals.
Can my 15-year-old volunteer at the Wildlife Center if I’m with him/her?
We do not offer any volunteer opportunities for those under the age of 16.
If I am a high school or college student and cannot come when school is in session, can I volunteer only during the summer?
Yes! Many of our volunteers are students. However, the usual six-hour commitment during a six-month period will have to be completed during your summer break.
Can I be a volunteer if I have a criminal record?
We do not accept applicants with a history of sexual offense, violent crime, theft or animal neglect/cruelty. We require all volunteer applicants to state any past criminal record and reserve the right to conduct a background check on any volunteer.
Do you offer court-appointed community service?
We do not at this time.
I prefer to fill out a paper application. Can I come down to the Adoption Center to do so?
No, we do not offer paper applications. All of our applications are to be completed online.
If I do not currently have a credit/debit card, can I pay the application fee in person with another payment method?
No, our payment portal is linked to our application process and must be completed online using a debit/credit card.
