Nearly 50 Animals Saved from Severe Neglect

Nearly 50 animals living in deplorable conditions were rescued from a north house property at 900 block of Hartwick near Castledale Drive.

On Tuesday morning, our Animal Cruelty Investigators partnered with Harris County Precinct 1 to rescue nearly 50 animals from a property where they were being neglected in horrific conditions.

When our Investigators arrived at the property on the 900 block of Hartwick, near Castledale Drive, they were met with an unsuspecting scene. But upon entering the residence, the reality of the animals’ conditions quickly became clear. Trash and junk were strewn and piled throughout the house, and every room was covered in garbage, urine, and feces. The overwhelming smell made it nearly impossible to breathe.

Inside, animals were confined in cramped cages, some with hardly enough space to turn around. Some cages were buried under piles of junk, while others were stacked on top of each other. In the backyard, larger dogs were kept in wire kennels. Cages for cats were matted with fur, cobwebs, and filth. Trash and stacked boxes blocked paths, making the rescue effort even more challenging.

In total, our team recovered 13 dogs, ten cats, one rabbit, and 25 fowls, including chickens and roosters. One dog, roaming free, had a large tumor on his side, with scars and scrapes covering his legs. The chickens and roosters, shockingly, were confined inside the house, fenced off or in cages. As our team released these animals from their cages, some nearly leaped with relief, while others cowered, traumatized by their ordeal.

This property was previously investigated by the Houston SPCA eight years ago, in April 2016, when 32 neglected dogs were rescued from similarly severe conditions. This case highlights the importance of reporting animal cruelty or neglect, even when it occurs within one’s own neighborhood.

“It’s critical that we work closely with law enforcement in nine surrounding counties to monitor properties that hoard animals, as they often become repeat offenders. The horrific living conditions do nothing but create a world of neglect and suffering for the animals,” said Josh Sailor, our Chief of Animal Cruelty.

All animals from the scene are now in the Houston SPCA’s care, receiving individualized treatment from our veterinary team. A hearing has been scheduled, at which a judge will determine their custody. If you witness animal cruelty, please call 713-869-7722.
