Houston SPCA Wins Custody of Six Starving Horses

(March 13, 2024)

Six emaciated horses, including five Thoroughbreds, were rescued from a property scattered with rusted metal debris with no food or water near the 8000 block of Stephen F. Austin Road in Freeport on March 6 at the request of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office. Officials at the scene said most of the horses were hundreds of pounds underweight and suffering from skin issues, hair loss, and overgrown hooves, which can be very painful.

A Houston SPCA veterinarian ranked three of the equine’s body condition scores as one, which is the lowest on a scale of one to 9. Houston SPCA veterinary, equine, and animal cruelty teams stayed late into the evening last week conducting cruelty exams and helping the equine settle in as the horses begin a refeeding program. The equine will continue their rehabilitation for many months before they can be placed into their adoption program.

The Houston SPCA is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit that operates solely on donations. It is not affiliated with any other animal welfare organization or chapter, locally or nationally.
