The Houston SPCA is excited to announce our Summer Pet Adoption Special, launching tomorrow, July 4th, through Thursday, July 31st! All month long, all dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens in our Adoption Center will be 50% off their regular adoption fee, which ranges from $35 to $195. Equine, farm animals, and small pets are excluded from this special.
There’s never been a better time to welcome a new furry friend into your home. Whether you’re looking for a playful kitten, a loyal pup, or a calm, loving adult pet, we have many wonderful animals ready to start their next chapter with you. When you adopt, you’re not only giving one animal a second chance—you’re also helping us give even more pets the opportunity to find loving homes.

Each pet adopted during the Summer Pet Adoption Special will also receive our comprehensive care package, which includes the following:
- A full health evaluation
- Up-to-date vaccinations
- Spay or neuter surgery
- A microchip with registration
- A free post-adoption wellness exam at any VCA Animal Hospital
- A starter bag of Hill’s Science Diet food

Pet Safety Tips for Summer and Fireworks Season
As the long July Fourth weekend approaches, our Vice President of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Roberta Westbrook, reminds pet owners to take the following preventive steps this summer:
1. Check ID and Microchips: Make sure your pet’s microchip and ID tag have up-to-date contact information. The Houston SPCA reunites hundreds of lost pets each year thanks to current microchip data.
2. Keep Pets Cool and Safe Outdoors: Always provide fresh water and shade, and keep pets away from alcohol, sunscreen, and citronella, which are toxic. During cookouts, avoid giving table scraps—bones, corn cobs, chocolate, avocado, and alcohol can all be dangerous.
3. Offer Pet-Friendly Treats: Skip the table food and treat your pets to safe alternatives like frozen pureed fruits or baked pumpkin cookies to keep them happy and healthy.
4. Protect Pets from Fireworks and Stress: Fireworks, sparklers, and fire pits can frighten or injure pets. Keep them indoors in a secure, quiet space. Tire them out earlier in the day, turn on the TV or radio to mask loud noises, and offer enrichment toys or treats to help ease anxiety.
