In the week since Hurricane Beryl hit the Texas coast, more than 1,600 wild animals were rescued or brought into the Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center, including 353 injured and orphaned egrets, for treatment and rehabilitation. While in our care, these birds received individual treatment, prioritizing nutrition and warmth.
After nearly a week in our care, our Wildlife staff prepared over 100 baby egrets and doves for the next step in their rehabilitation journey. To expedite their travel, the Houston SPCA partnered with Pilots N Paws, a non-profit organization that connects pilots with rescuers to transport animals in need. Once the birds were stable, our volunteers carefully prepared their transport boxes to ensure comfort and security for the trip. The Executive Director of the Wildlife Center oversaw the transport and assisted in loading the birds onto a plane arranged by Pilots N Paws. Once secured, the birds embarked on a flight of a lifetime to the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Amarillo, TX, where they will complete their rehabilitation.

This week we are celebrating helping hands and big hearts and we are very proud to have been the first step in these animals’ recovery.
The Wildlife Center is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for all wildlife in need. We are so grateful for such an exceptional community and avid partners like Pilots N Paws and the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center who enable us to help wildlife.
The Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center operates solely on donations and must always be ready to respond to natural disasters like Hurricane Beryl. Our impact reaches thousands of animals each year, with more than 14,000 injured or orphaned animals brought into our care in 2023. Please consider supporting one of the nation’s most comprehensive rehabilitation centers.
