50 Cats Dead in Shocking Animal Hoarding Discovery

The Houston SPCA’s Animal Cruelty Investigators recently uncovered a disturbing hoarder situation in San Leon, where more than 50 animals were found dead.

In partnership with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and the Galveston County Animal Services, our team searched a San Leon property after receiving a tip from a concerned community member. Inside the building, they discovered a horrifying scene: dozens of kennels and cages filled with animal remains, many reduced to bones. These poor animals had been left to suffer in horrible conditions, trapped in cages with no chance of escape. The floor was covered in ankle-deep rotting trash, decaying food, urine, and feces. It took our team two days to sift through the debris and uncover all the remains scattered across the property. In addition to the heartbreaking number of deceased cats, our team also discovered the decaying body of a large dog hidden in a closet.

Amid the devastation, there were a few survivors: four cats and a horse. The Galveston County Animal Services rescued the cats rescued the cats, while the Houston SPCA took in the emaciated horse to be treated by our veterinary staff and Equine team. This 30-year-old Percheron, almost hidden in the overgrown grass despite her towering frame, was emaciated with no access to clean water or food. She was very friendly when our team rescued her, clearly relieved to see a small sign of hope in such a heartbreaking situation. “This has to be one of the worst scenes of animal cruelty we’ve seen concerning so many deceased animals in one location,” said Joshua Sailor, Chief of Animal Cruelty Investigations.
